The reasons for a family to homeschool are as varied as there are families who do homeschool. Why are you considering homeschooling? Educational concerns with the current school system? Social or religious reasons? Take a step back from the aforementioned. The real reason you would even consider when it comes to homeschooling your child should be the wonderment and satisfaction you receive out of teaching and spending your days with your child. The opportunity to learn with your child and experience the pleasure of mastering each of your homeschool unit studies with your child should be your reason to homeschool. Each day learning more and more about your child should be your reason to homeschool. If this is not the motivational foundation from which you homeschool, then all other reasons probably won’t carry you the distance.

Here as some other very important topics to give serious consideration to:

What is your level of patience? As you already know, just the everyday activities of parenting can sometime test one’s patience. Add to that the struggles of learning unit studies and your level of patience will be taken to a new level.

Are you good at multitasking and scheduling on the fly? With all the demands on your time that homeschooling brings, remember that the everyday tasks and chores around the house will still remain. Many times you’ll have to combine an everyday household task or trip with a homeschool lesson.

Are you organized? Although many homeschool lessons and unit studies may appear to be impromptu and random, they are not. Your homeschool lesson plans and daily schedule should be well thought out. And you should know how much documentation and record keeping is required by your state.

Are you creative? Making an excellent educational experience without busting the budget is a must. There are many inexpensive and free resources available.

How comfortable are you with correcting your child? How comfortable is your child with you correcting them? Do you feel your child is comfortable telling you that they ‘just don’t get it’? As anyone learns something new correction and feedback is constant not just the occasional correcting through the course of the day.

Finally, how does your child feel about homeschooling? Remember, this is about them and their education. If they aren’t excited about the opportunity, then homeschooling the family may not be right at this time.

With patience, creativity, and a good sense of humor, you will be on your way to a very rewarding experience.
